ooc rant: Why Are You Here? Vaan is an integral addition to the events in the game whether you believe it or not. He may not be the most heavy anchor, but there’s a few reasons why we’re experiencing things through him. As a writer, you get a certain sense of stimulation for your readers when you choose what point of view to write from. If I write from the standpoint of, say, the Empire or Dalmasca, it may be 3rd person, since I’m enveloping quite a deal to get you to understand. But if I choose from the perspective of one person, as in Vaan, it’s 1st person, and I’m taking you around the world through his eyes. Having chosen a (somewhat) neutral body from which to cast out the game, we are basically in Vaan’s position the whole time. He is angry at the Empire and Basch for a lot of things, but put simply, he (along with we) don’t have a damn clue as to what’s really going on. This provides for so many more twists, openings, and surprises, and let’s us experience the story one bit a time.
A lot of people don’t really think even he knows why he’s there, but I guess they forget Jahara a lot. Speaking to Ashe, he tells her that he felt so alone—he would say “I want to be a sky pirate” just so he could forget about Reks and the pain, that following her and Balthier will help him find his purpose. He sets his conviction then and there in Jahara before Ashe; a rite of passage, as it were, as he, like many other victims of the war, are trying to find their purpose, a place where they can belong, feel welcome. Vaan becomes a sky pirate in Revenant Wings and Tactics A2; which proves at last he found his purpose. It’s an unconnected theme, but a theme important to all people everywhere, and Vaan embodies it.
